It is “a special spiritual blessing given to worthy and faithful members of the Church in the temple.” (Gospel Topics: Endowment, lds.org) “The ordinance consists of a series of instructions and includes covenants we make to live righteously and comply with the requirements of the gospel.”  (True to the Faith, p. 171)

This important initiatory rite performed in the temple consists of being ceremonially washed, receiving a new name, receiving sacred garments, viewing the LDS version of creation and the Fall, and learning various handshakes that are essential for exaltation. This ordinance is considered very sacred and highly personal to a Mormon.
