This is a common expression for a specific task faithful LDS members are assigned by the bishop within their ward. Since Mormonism teaches that the bishop is representing God, there is a high level of importance assigned to the task, which makes turning down a calling difficult for a faithful Mormon. Most active members serve in a specific calling at their church. To “magnify a calling” means to be obedient and work hard in a Mormon’s assignment. A missionary will receive their “call” in the mail to let them know of their assignment for the next two years. The opening of these call papers is a very important family event.
