The Book of Mormon is one of the standard works of Mormon scripture and is regarded as “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.” According to Joseph Smith, he translated it by divine power from ancient records inscribed on gold plates, which he said were buried in upstate New York. The book tells the history of groups who migrated from the Middle East to the Americas and records their religious experiences, prophecies, and wars. Its climax describes a visit from the resurrected Jesus Christ to the people in the Americas, where he taught his gospel and established his church. For Latter-day Saints, the Book of Mormon stands alongside the Bible as sacred scripture and evidence of Joseph Smith’s prophetic calling.
