The Word of Wisdom is a health code found in Doctrine and Covenants section 89. Latter-day Saints believe it was revealed by God to Joseph Smith in 1833. It instructs members to care for their bodies and avoid substances that are harmful or addictive.
The Word of Wisdom prohibits alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea—interpreted as the “hot drinks” mentioned in the revelation. Members are also encouraged to eat wholesome foods, especially grains, fruits, and vegetables, and to use meat sparingly.
Obedience to the Word of Wisdom is seen as both a commandment and a sign of faithfulness. Members must follow it to be considered temple worthy and to hold a temple recommend. While some see it as a physical health law, many Latter-day Saints view it primarily as a test of spiritual obedience.
Biblical Christianity teaches that righteousness and spiritual standing before God are not determined by dietary laws or abstaining from certain foods or drinks (Mark 7:18–23; Romans 14:17). Christians are free to enjoy all that God provides with thanksgiving, recognizing that true holiness comes through faith in Christ, not in external observances.
