Ward is the term used for a local LDS congregation, similar to what Christian denominations might call a parish. Each ward is made up of several hundred members and is led by a bishop, a lay minister supported by two counselors.
Wards are organized geographically, meaning members attend the ward that covers their neighborhood. Sunday meetings typically include sacrament meeting, Sunday School, and age-specific classes for men, women, youth, and children. Wards also organize community service, social events, and welfare efforts.
When there are not enough members to form a ward, a smaller congregation called a branch is organized and led by a branch president. Several wards and branches together form a stake.
