Scripture - Truth in Love Ministry

Dictionary of Mormonese

Scripture

In Mormonism, scripture refers to four books collectively called the Standard Works: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. These are all considered inspired and authoritative. While the Bible is included, Mormons believe it is true only “as far as it is translated correctly” (Article of Faith 8). They often teach that “plain and precious truths” were lost from the Bible over time, making the other LDS scriptures necessary to restore completeness.

The LDS Church uses the King James Version of the Bible, but the additional books are viewed as modern revelation that clarify and expand biblical truth. Because of this, Mormons see continuing revelation through prophets as equal in authority to written scripture.

Biblical Christianity teaches that the Bible alone is the inspired Word of God — complete, sufficient, and without error in its original writings (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Christians believe nothing has been lost that needs restoring and that all saving truth is found in the Old and New Testaments.
