In Mormonism, the word gods may be used to describe the belief that there are multiple divine beings. Heavenly Father is regarded as the God of this world, but Mormons also teach that other worlds have their own gods. Faithful men and women who achieve exaltation are believed to progress to godhood themselves, continuing to create and rule under Heavenly Father’s direction.
This idea is rooted in the LDS teaching that God himself was once a man who progressed to godhood. Joseph Smith famously declared, “As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become.” In this sense, gods refers both to the existence of other divine beings and to the future potential of exalted humans.
This differs from biblical Christianity, which affirms there is only one God from all eternity (Isaiah 43:10; Isaiah 44:6–8).
