Bible - Truth in Love Ministry

Dictionary of Mormonese

Bible

The Bible is one of the four books Mormons consider scripture, alongside the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price. According to the Eighth Article of Faith, it is accepted only “as far as it is translated correctly,” which in LDS usage often means “as far as it has been transmitted without error.”

The Book of Mormon teaches that many “plain and precious” truths were lost over the centuries (1 Nephi 13:28), which makes the Bible less reliable in Mormon thought than other LDS scriptures.

The official LDS edition uses the King James Version (KJV), unchanged in text but with added cross-references, a Bible Dictionary, study helps, and excerpts from Joseph Smith’s translation. In practice, most Mormons are less familiar with the Bible than with other LDS writings, and its teachings are always interpreted through modern LDS revelation.
