In Mormon belief, John the Baptist plays a vital role in the restoration of priesthood authority. On May 15, 1829, he is said to have appeared as a resurrected being to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. During this visitation, he conferred upon them the Aaronic Priesthood, giving them the authority to baptize by immersion for the remission of sins. This event is described in Joseph Smith—History and is seen as the beginning of the restoration of divine authority to the earth. John the Baptist is therefore remembered not only as the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus in the New Testament but also as a heavenly messenger who helped reestablish priesthood power in modern times.
