One of the two levels of priesthood, the other being the Melchizedek Priesthood. Named after Aaron, brother of Moses, it is considered a preparatory priesthood and is usually given to boys beginning at age 12 and to new male converts. Holders have the authority to perform baptisms, prepare and pass the sacrament, and assist with ministering and church duties. It is regarded as an important step toward receiving the higher Melchizedek Priesthood.
Biblical Christianity teaches that the Aaronic or Levitical priesthood was replaced by the Melchizedek priesthood (which only has one priest, Jesus Christ) and no longer exists. See Hebrews 7:15-19.
