In Mormonism, spirit prison is the temporary state where the spirits of the dead who did not accept the LDS gospel—or who lived sinful lives—go after death. It is not a place of eternal punishment but of waiting, learning, and potential repentance. Missionary work continues there as faithful spirits from paradise are sent to preach the gospel to those in prison (see Doctrine and Covenants 138).
Those who accept the message and the proxy ordinances performed for them in LDS temples may eventually leave spirit prison and enter paradise.
Biblical Christianity teaches that death ends all opportunity for repentance or conversion (Hebrews 9:27). The Bible never describes a second chance after death but instead distinguishes only two final destinies: eternal life with God or eternal separation from him (Luke 16:26; John 3:36).
