In Mormonism, the Seventy are groups of men who hold the Melchizedek Priesthood and are called to assist the Twelve Apostles in overseeing the worldwide church. The term comes from Luke 10:1, where Jesus appointed seventy disciples. In the modern LDS Church, there are multiple quorums of Seventy, organized under the direction of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
Members of the First and Second Quorums of the Seventy are considered general authorities, serving full-time and often presiding over large geographic areas of the church. Other quorums serve locally. The Seventy are tasked with proclaiming the gospel and strengthening the church under apostolic direction.
