In Mormonism, the sacrament is the weekly ordinance most similar to communion. During sacrament meeting, bread and water are blessed by Aaronic Priesthood holders and passed to the congregation. Members partake to renew the covenants they made at baptism, promising to remember Christ, keep his commandments, and take his name upon them.
Participation in the sacrament is closely tied to worthiness. Mormons are encouraged to repent beforehand, and those judged unworthy by church leaders may be restricted from partaking. Unlike biblical communion, which points to Christ’s finished work and assurance of forgiveness, the LDS sacrament emphasizes a member’s ongoing commitment and obedience as conditions for remaining in God’s favor.
