The Melchizedek Priesthood is the higher of the two levels of priesthood in Mormonism and is regarded as the authority to act in God’s name for spiritual matters. Worthy male members are typically ordained beginning around age 18, following service in the Aaronic Priesthood. Offices within the Melchizedek Priesthood include elder, high priest, seventy, and patriarch. Those holding this priesthood can bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost, lead congregations, and perform ordinances such as temple sealings. It is considered essential for achieving exaltation and eternal family life. The Melchizedek Priesthood is viewed as a continuation of God’s ancient order restored in modern times.
