In Mormonism, coffee is prohibited under the Word of Wisdom, a health code found in D&C 89. Joseph Smith and early church leaders interpreted the phrase “hot drinks” in this revelation to mean coffee and tea. Drinking coffee is considered a serious violation of church standards and can prevent members from holding a temple recommend, which is required for participation in the temple and essential ordinances. Because of this, abstaining from coffee is often treated as a visible marker of obedience and worthiness in Mormon culture.
