When many people read about the Old Testament tabernacle, they see a complicated system of furniture, sacrifices, and rituals. It can feel distant and confusing.

But the tabernacle is actually one of the most powerful ways the Bible shows us who Jesus is and what he came to do.

Every part of the tabernacle tells a story.
The sacrifices teach that sin leads to death.
The curtain shows that sin separates us from a holy God.
The mercy seat reveals that God himself provides the sacrifice that brings forgiveness.

In other words, the tabernacle is a visual sermon about the gospel.

That makes it a helpful conversation topic with Latter-day Saints. Many people in the LDS church are familiar with temples and sacred spaces, but the Old Testament tabernacle shows something surprising: the temple system was never about people proving themselves worthy to approach God. It was about God providing the way for sinners to come to him.

The entire structure pointed forward to Jesus.

A Helpful Way to Start the Conversation

You might ask a simple question like:

“When you read about the tabernacle in the Old Testament, what do you think God was trying to teach his people through all those sacrifices and objects?”

From there, you can explore together what the tabernacle shows about three important truths:

  1. Sin separates humanity from God
  2. God himself provides the sacrifice that removes sin
  3. Jesus fulfills everything the tabernacle pointed toward

Instead of debating religious systems, the conversation naturally moves toward who Jesus is and what he has done.
