What Will the Missionaries Talk About?

Are you wondering what your missionaries will want to talk about with you? Chances are, they’re wondering the same thing—especially if you’ve made it clear that you’re not interested in converting.

In the past, LDS missionaries followed a rigid set of lessons with every investigator. Today, while they’re still trained to teach through prepared materials, they’re also encouraged to adjust based on your interests and questions.

So, what do you want to talk about?

You don’t have to sit back and let them steer every conversation. In fact, some missionaries are relieved when you guide the discussion in a clear and respectful way.

Here are a few conversation ideas:

  • “What do you normally teach someone who’s exploring your church for the first time?” (This may prompt them to introduce one of their standard lessons.)
  • “I can look up LDS beliefs online. What I’d really love to know is: what do you personally believe, especially about the person and work of Jesus?”
  • “What does it take to receive the best that God has to offer?”
  • “What does it take to confidently approach God?”

These kinds of questions allow you to get to the heart of what they believe and open the door for you to share the confidence and peace you have because of Jesus.

Let the conversation be relational, not rehearsed, and keep the spotlight on the gospel.
