What do I say to Mormon missionaries when I see them in public?

Many Christians wonder about this. They want to say something, but aren’t sure where to begin. What you say may depend on where you see them, since missionaries aren’t allowed to leave their assigned areas without special permission.

If You See Them Near Your Home

If you see missionaries walking through your neighborhood or in a nearby store, chances are they’ve been assigned to your area. This is a great opportunity!

You might say something like:

“Hi! I’m happy in my Christian faith, but I’d be interested in hearing what you believe. Would you be willing to visit sometime this week?”

Even if you know quite a bit about Mormonism, that statement is still true—because you don’t know what these missionaries believe.

Try to schedule a visit on the spot—ideally for a few days later, so you have time to pray and prepare.

If You See Them Outside Your Area

If you’re far from home (at a gas station, rest stop, etc.), they won’t be allowed to visit you. But you still have options:

  • Ask if they could connect you with missionaries in your area.

“I know you might not be able to come to my house, but could someone else from your team?”

  • Ask about their experience.“How has your mission been going?”
Then, gently share a short testimony: “I’ve found so much peace and joy knowing that Jesus already did everything for me.”
Simple statements like this can stay with them—and may even spark further interest.

  • Offer to meet in their area.
If you’re willing, you could suggest a neutral location like a restaurant or park in their assigned area.

No matter where you meet them, your kindness matters.

They’re used to being ignored or treated harshly. A simple smile, a thoughtful question, or a gentle expression of faith may open a door you didn’t expect.
