Introduction to Understanding the Person
Relationships are often complex—and always unique. No one has the identical relationship you have with your friend or family member. Neither is your relationship with them identical to any other relationship you have. Far too often, this is not recognized, and people assume that what works with one person will work with others.
There are indeed some general principles that apply to most relationships—principles we cite. However, before following any of these suggestions, evaluate them to see if they apply to your relationship. Many will. Some might not.
A relationship with a member of your immediate family (spouse, parent, child) is vastly different than one with a friend or a more distant relative. For this reason, we treat them differently.
As you continue, be sure to select the material that applies to your situation.
