Following the Word of Wisdom means to abstain from alcoholic drinks, tobacco, tea, and coffee.

The LDS teaches that the Holy Ghost revealed to Joseph Smith a “law of health” that is to benefit the spiritual and physical welfare of Mormons (D&C 89). Attached to these commandments are promises of blessings that are associated with being obedient to them. Strictly following the Word of Wisdom is an essential component to determine a Mormon’s worthiness and to receive a temple recommend.

It is common practice for Mormons to enjoy hot drinks such as herbal tea or hot cider. They are technically allowed to drink caffeinated drinks such as soda, but this is frowned upon since part of following the Word of Wisdom is not becoming addicted to any substance.
