“Spiritual gifts are blessings or abilities given by God to His children through the power of the Holy Spirit. Gifts of the Spirit are given to bless and benefit those who love the Lord and seek to keep His commandments.” (Gospel Topics: Spiritual Gifts, lds.org) “[There are] many gifts of the Spirit. The Lord may bless you in other ways depending on your faithfulness and on your needs and the needs of those you serve. He has commanded us to work diligently so we can receive spiritual gifts.” (True to the Faith, p. 166)
Mormons believe that all blessings from God come in the form of a “gift”. For instance, the forgiveness of sins, grace, and redemption are gifts from God. However, receiving these gifts is entirely dependent upon a Mormon’s obedience to their gospel and ordinances. Spiritual gifts work the same way. They are abilities or blessings given by the Holy Ghost to every member of the LDS Church who has proven their faithfulness.
“There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated — And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.” (LDS Scripture, Doctrine and Covenants 130:20-21)
